The Importance of Daily Aerobic (Cardiovascular) Activities

Why is Aerobic (cardiovascular) training so important?  Let us first discuss what Aerobic means, (besides what we all may think of, such as “step aerobics”).  Aerobic activities mean that your muscles require oxygen and the capacity to take in, transport and utilize it.  Again, why is it so important to include Aerobic (cardiovascular) activities into our daily life?  

Have you had a chance to read the article; “Figuring Your Target Heart Rate”?  I discussed with you about a deconditioned heart and a conditioned heart.  Why Aerobic (cardiovascular) training is such an important component to physical fitness is building that Vascularization and the health of your heart.  Vascularization happens when you start or maintain an Aerobic (cardiovascular) training program.  As your body adapts to Aerobic activity, Vascularization happens which means that you will increase in size of your blood vessels and your body will create new capillaries in order to keep up with your body’s oxygen demand.  The benefit of Aerobic activity is that you are helping the heart not have to work so hard to pump blood throughout the body.

So what are the other benefits of Aerobic activity you ask?  Here are just a few examples:

*      Burns body fat!

*      Research indicates that for every hour you spend exercising aerobically, you extend your life two hours.

*      Increasing energy!

*      Aids in relieving stress, anxiety, or depression.

*      Aids in prevention of certain types of cancer

*      Enhances self-image and confidence

*      Reduces the risk of heart disease

*      Increases the good (HDL) cholesterol

*      Improves the QUALITY of sleep

*      Improves with mental clarity and sharpness

What are your favorite activities?  Do you like sports?  Running?  Walking?  Do you like to participate in group fitness?  Any activity that will get your heart pumping at your target heart rate will be effective in conditioning the heart, but building endurance, self-confidence, expanding your life (we all love that), and so much more!
